A Story of Strength, Faith, and Connection

Recently, Kelly reached out about an anniversary photo session to celebrate 26 years of marriage. Her story is one of transformation - of family, faith, and perseverance through life’s hardest seasons. Together, she and Daron have built a life centered on loyalty, resilience, and a deep love that has carried them through challenge and change.

As I continue connecting through the stories of others, I find healing in my own. Not by telling my own story, but by telling theirs.

Kelly + Daron’s Story

“We’ve had to work really hard on our marriage. The first few years were tough.

In October of 2003, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. That changed our whole world. We were both devastated and unsure what the outcome would be. Luckily, we caught it early, so I only needed surgery to remove it - no chemo or radiation, thankfully. Still, the thought of not seeing my kids grow up scared me to death. I had to close my daycare for four months to recover, and Daron worked multiple jobs to keep us afloat. It’s still hard for him to talk about that time.

Almost two years ago, our middle son had basal cell carcinoma removed from his face. Then, just months later, our youngest was diagnosed with testicular cancer. That rocked our world. He underwent chemotherapy for four and a half months - the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes, lungs, and stomach. As parents, the thought of losing your child is devastating. But we came together as a family and became closer than ever. Now, we gather for Sunday dinners every other week - a small but sacred tradition that reminds us of what matters most. Daron is my entire world, and I am his. We wouldn’t be where we are today if we hadn’t taken that chance on each other.”

An Evening Filled with Light and Grace

We met for their fall anniversary session in Springfield, Missouri, surrounded by the beauty of changing leaves and soft light filtering through the trees. The lake reflected their calm connection, a mirror to their enduring love. Every glance, every quiet smile spoke volumes about the life they’ve shared, not perfect, but real. A love that’s been tested and refined through time, hardship, and grace.

Transformation and the Butterfly

Transformation has been a recurring theme in my life lately. One quiet morning, as I sat outside reflecting, a butterfly landed on my lap. Moments later, another touched down on my face, like a kiss of approval. It stayed for several seconds before being chased away by my curious pet, leaving behind an unexpected peace. It felt like a whisper: your transformation is ready - stay with the process.

Transformation can be complex. It can be messy, painful, and prolonged. But like a butterfly’s metamorphosis, beauty often emerges only after surrender. Like the transformation of a butterfly, if we struggle to escape the process, we will remain incomplete and unable to rebuild into something new. Stories like Kelly and Daron’s remind me that perseverance and hope, grit and determination, create the foundation for something truly beautiful. Staying the course, but also knowing when to change course, is key to enduring the transformation process

As I think about that butterfly, I realize I’m somewhere in the middle of my own transformation - no longer a caterpillar, but not quite a butterfly. If the final result is anything like Kelly and Daron’s love, strong, radiant, and full of grace, I’ll consider myself blessed.
